The Canada Digital Adoption Program (CDAP), initially launched as a massive $4 billion initiative to accelerate the digital transformation of Canadian businesses, has experienced highly unexpected and abrupt changes in recent months. Navigating this shifting landscape requires agility and an understanding of alternative funding routes.
In February 2024, the highly popular "Boost Your Business Technology" stream (Stream 2) was abruptly closed to new applications—nearly a year ahead of its scheduled end date. This stream provided critical $15,000 grants for digital adoption plans and unlocked access to $100,000 in zero-interest BDC loans.
If you already have a signed agreement: The good news is that if you secured a signed grant agreement before the closure, your funding is protected. You can still seek reimbursement for your digital adoption plan and proceed with applying for the 0% interest loan through the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). Additionally, the highly valuable $7,300 youth wage subsidy for implementing the plan remains available to existing agreement holders.
The "Grow Your Business Online" stream (Stream 1), which offers a $2,400 micro-grant designed strictly for e-commerce implementation and digital marketing initiatives, extended its application deadline to September 30, 2024. However, it operates on a first-come, first-served basis and may close earlier if capacity is reached. All CDAP programs are slated to officially sunset by March 31, 2025.
With the primary heavy-lifting digital grant now closed, SMEs must pivot their funding strategies. Fortunately, provincial and regional economic development agencies still offer substantial technology adoption and commercialization grants. Programs prioritizing cybersecurity implementations, ERP systems for manufacturing, and AI integrations (like the new NRC IRAP AI Assist program) are heavily funded right now.
